Animated MMS GIFs are one of the most effective ways to capture attention in a mobile marketing message. Whether you're promoting a flash sale, showcasing a new product, or driving event sign-ups, a well-crafted GIF can turn a simple MMS picture into a scroll-stopping campaign.
But there’s more to success than just animation—file size, resolution, and design play a huge role in delivery and performance. This guide outlines the best practices for designing GIFs that look sharp, load quickly, and stay within the MMS image size limit.
Your business can also leverage the power of GIFs in MMS campaigns to engage and convert customers effectively.
Why Use GIFs in MMS Campaigns?
Unlike static images, GIFs convey motion and emotion, allowing you to say more without overwhelming your message. They’re lightweight, device-friendly, and easy to produce. They work seamlessly in mobile messaging, where attention spans are short and content needs to deliver quickly.
Brands use MMS GIFs to:
Highlight limited-time offers.
Animate product features or benefits.
Guide users through a short visual journey.
Add a layer of personality or urgency to their messages.
But success in MMS marketing starts with understanding the technical boundaries.
Best Practices for MMS GIFs
1. Keep the File Size under 450KB
When it comes to MMS gifs, file size is everything. Most carriers enforce strict limits on MMS image size, typically around 300KB to 500KB. At Kudosity, we recommend staying under 450KB to ensure consistent delivery across networks.
Larger files may be compressed automatically by carriers, leading to poor image quality—or not delivered at all.
2. Limit GIF duration to 3–5 Seconds
The ideal GIF length balances storytelling with attention span. A short, punchy loop (3 to 5 seconds) is not only more effective but also easier to compress and less likely to be cut off during sending.
Shorter GIFs also allow your audience to absorb the message without needing to replay it multiple times.
3. Use a resolution of 480x480 pixels or smaller
Bigger dimensions mean more pixels to load and a heavier file size. For MMS, aim for a maximum resolution of 480x480 pixels, or scale accordingly if your GIF is portrait or landscape-oriented.
Smaller dimensions ensure faster loading and reduce the chance of message failure.
4. Reduce the number of colours
Most GIFs use 256 colours by default, but that’s often more than you need. Try limiting your GIF to 32 or even 16 colours where possible, especially if you’re using flat illustrations or minimal design. This can significantly reduce file size with little noticeable difference.
5. Optimise your GIF with compression tools
Once your GIF is ready, run it through a GIF optimiser to remove excess data. Tools like:
EZGif
Adobe Photoshop’s export settings
Online compressors like Compress-Or-Die
These tools reduce file size without sacrificing too much visual quality, helping you stay safely under the MMS image size limit.
Tips for better MMS GIF campaigns
Beyond the technical specs, a few creative choices can help your MMS picture perform better in the inbox.
Use bold, readable text: Keep copy short and large enough to read on smaller screens. If needed, use captions sparingly.
Avoid over-designing: Stick to one central message. Cluttered visuals or excessive transitions can reduce clarity and inflate file size.
Front-load the impact: Make sure the first few seconds include your brand or offer. This is when attention is at its peak.
Limit effects: Fades, glows, and overlays may look nice, but they often add unnecessary weight. A clean, sharp cut can be more effective.
Test across devices: Always preview your GIF on different screen sizes and operating systems before launching the campaign.
Popular Tools to Create MMS GIFs
Creating GIFs for MMS doesn’t require advanced design skills. Here are a few tools that are beginner-friendly and effective for keeping file sizes in check:
GIPHY GIF Maker: Free and easy to use. Ideal for simple slideshow-style GIFs using existing images.
Canva or Adobe Express: Great for templated design, with export options for web-optimised formats.
Adobe Photoshop: Offers advanced export settings and deeper control over frame rate, colours, and compression.
We find GIPHY’s GIF Maker tool to be the simplest, most optimised, and customisable. Best of all, it’s entirely free, and anyone with an internet connection and a web browser can use it. If you're using GIPHY, keep the animation clean, use minimal frames, and skip filters or multiple stickers to maintain quality and keep the file light.
We'll show you the method from GIPHY that we feel can help you achieve the 450KB file size or lower.
Before we begin, take a minute to create a free account or login to GIPHY.
This GIF consists of two images. Feel free to save these and follow along:
You can choose to add more images, but be mindful that more will increase the file size.
Also, remember to keep text-based images simple and easy to read.
Step 1: Upload your images
On the GIPHY GIF Maker, select 'Choose Photo' or 'GIF' and pick the images you want to use.
Step 2: Re-order images & change duration
Next, re-order the images if necessary. You can do so by dragging on an image under 'Slideshow Settings' and moving it to your desired position.
We recommend choosing the first image as one that can grab the most attention. The next ones should inform your customers on what to do next, like taking advantage of a sale, registering for an event, or committing to a program.
You can also change the duration of the image before it transitions to the next one. We find the sweet spot to be between 2 to 3 seconds.
When you’re done, click 'Continue to Decorate'.
Step 3: Decorate & customise (optional)
This step is entirely optional and is dependent on the images you’ve prepared. If you already have the creatives ready, then feel free to skip this step by clicking 'Continue to Upload'.
For those who want to customise, let’s dive deeper into the features. Adding a caption is an easy way to include a call-to-action to your GIFs, such as “30% Off Summer Sale”. This feature can be useful when you’re on a time crunch and need to quickly send an MMS campaign.
You can choose to add stickers to your GIF, similar to decorating an Instagram Story. We recommend adding one sticker only to minimise file size and to keep the message simple.
In our example, we added a sun-shaped sale sticker to fit within the summer sale theme. When tastefully done, this can add an extra layer of impact to your GIF.
Lastly, there are filters and draw tools, but we recommend skipping those customisations as they tend to increase the file size without adding too much value for MMS campaigns.
When you’re done customising, click 'Continue to Upload'.
Step 4: Save your GIF
On the next page, skip the tags and source and click 'Upload to GIPHY'.
After the creation process is complete, right-click on the GIF you just created and save it.
Ensure that the file size is below 450 KB, and if it’s over, try using EZGif.com’s optimising tools, and you should be able to reduce it by an additional 15 to 50%.
We find file sizes under 1 MB can be optimised down to under 450KB. Otherwise, consider remaking the GIF by using lower resolution images, and applying fewer animations, images, filters, and effects.
You can also create GIFs using other methods from GIPHY, such as extracting a portion of a video from YouTube or Vimeo. However, we find that the file sizes are generally too large for MMS campaigns.
Feel free to experiment with the other methods as you see fit.
